Founded in 1917 Ramjas College today boasts of a spacious campus, state-of-the art infrastructure and highly acclaimed faculty trained at leading universities in India and abroad. At Ramjas, we believe in providing holistic education. The primary stress is on achieving academic excellence; however, we also provide various opportunities to help students enhance their knowledge and skills in areas that we believe are important for their all round development. Add on courses in areas as diverse as forensic sciences, human rights, language courses in Indian and foreign languages, and specialty clubs and societies like the future club allow students of our college to enrich their knowledge. The broad philosophy at Ramjas is to nurture today’s youth to face tomorrow’s challenges.
From seminars to debates to cultural events, there is a continual buzz around Ramjas. As an example I would like to mention the performance of our debating team, which has been simply outstanding; it has swept all major debates in the University of Delhi and its colleges and at the national and international level in recent years. The College also stands for a high sense of values, best exemplified in the transparency we maintain in the sharing and management of information. The Students Information Services (SIS) system is a dedicated web-based management information system module that makes all student related data vis-à-vis assignments, attendance, tutorials, etc available online in real time. Our information sharing philosophy makes the college administration extremely accessible. I personally am always available to directly address any student related issues.
At Ramjas, we believe in questioning conventional and conservative opinions that are insensitive and restricting to both men and women. As part of our interventionist and pro-active initiative, we have a Gender Forum and a Women’s Development Cell (WDC), which promote awareness and educational programmes to empower all of us as educated and aware citizens.
Ramjas is the first college in Delhi University to conceptualize and implement an integrated network connecting all departments and disciplines. Every citizen of the Ramjas community has access to free internet service, library information system, and the student information system. Another milestone for the college is the induction of 28 short term certificate courses along with many novel clubs and societies. To overcome linguistic and cultural barriers, Ramjas has incorporated new language courses through the School of Foreign and Indian Languages. Further, the college has distinguished itself in the International arena of education and research by initiating an academic exchange programme with premier Universities such as University of Copenhagen, University of Antwerp and Lahore University of Management Science, etc. With the rich legacy of 91 years of service to education, Ramjas is heading for international recognition as a centre for academic excellence.
Importantly, Ivy League colleges have chosen Ramjas as a designated institution for their students to visit India for India specific courses. The arrangement is organized under the International Education Services programme. This continuing arrangement is in recognition of the high all round standards established by Ramjas in recent years.
The College has modern facilities backed by the latest in technology, making it an excellent institute for learning and research. The College has an air-conditioned auditorium that has hosted renowned performers from all over India, and a state-of-the-art Seminar Room with advanced multi-media facilities. An attractive cafeteria, renovated classrooms and departments with individual computers and LCD projectors add to the over all charm of life in Ramjas.
The over 100,000 titles in the library are all bar-coded. Books are issued matching bar coded student ID Cards and titles of their choice. Availability of titles can be checked on computers available in the library.
The Student information system (SIS) stores all attendance, tutorials, presentations, project reports and midterm results posted online term-wise according to the university prescribed roster. Teachers, staff and students have access to syllabi, personal data, tutorial topics, articles relevant to assigned tutorial, attendance, etc. SIS ensures transparency, accuracy and ease of data management. Students are encouraged to acquire their login ID / password (for SIS) issued immediately after admission.
The College has built an impressive community area called the Student Activity Centre for informal meetings and discussions regarding academic, cultural, political and other creative activities. It has an LCD projection system as well as a hi-fi sound system. This has helped in greater student participation in ECAC affairs.
Starting this year, Ramjas College is inaugurating a dedicated Research Centre with ‘Basic Research’ facilities for undergraduate students, particularly third year level students, and ‘Advanced Research’ facilities for Faculty.
Ramjas is an equal opportunity College and has a strong commitment to gender equality. In 2005 the College opened a 80 seat Hostel for women. It is generously outfitted, with separate management, entrance, security, dining–hall, common room and various other facilities.
The faculty members and the Principal continually follow the development and performance of each student in class, mid-term examinations and tutorials. The College has 21 academic societies, all of which remain pro-active throughout the year. It is obligatory for departments and academic societies of the College to organize talks/workshops/seminars/symposia/screening of films, etc in each term during the academic session.
DIVERSIFIED KNOWLEDGE ACCESS
The College is pioneering a landmark initiative starting this year. We are opening a KNOWLEDGE CENTRE which will serve as a hub for knowledge exchange at various levels. It will serve as the nodal centre for additional and supplementary academics incursions, it will help students explore their specialized creative forays into unexplored conceptualizations, and it will also serve as the platform for helping students gain access to non governmental organizations, both for purposes lf exposure and later, placement. We hope to make our Knowledge Centre a huge success and student are urged to participate actively in it. Knowledge cannot be the prerogative of one medium or one language. With this in mind, the College established the School of Foreign and Indian Languages in 2003.
At Ramjas, we believe that the key to be an equal knowledge worker is exposure to the globalized world and this is possible only when students and the teaching faculty of the College interact with their international counterparts. With this in mind, a Centre for International education was established in 2003 under which the College signed MoUs with Denmark International Study Programme, University of Copenhagen, Denmark, University of Antwerp, Belgium, and Lahore University of Management Science (LUMS) Pakistan.
In order to extend financial support to students the College has introduced a scheme where students can ‘work while studying’. We engage students’ services in the library and in data feeding sections of computers when required. The College also helps College students find part time jobs during the summer vacations. The Placement Cell helps students find employment in top corporations and organizations.
As part of the ever-growing Ramjas Community, there is the Ramjas College Alumni Association that organizes regular events to strengthen links between students old and new.
Since the last academic session, the college has assigned a significant role for students, with the introduction of Peer Tutoring. Like every year, each student of the College is invited to start any activity – may be a club or a wall-paper or a magazine or anything – the possibilities are endless – which he/she finds creative, fun-orientated and helps explore untapped potentialities. Each faculty member will announce consultation hours, during which time students may meet them for guidance and future planning.
As Principal, I invite all students at Ramjas College to communicate directly with me. You are always free to meet me personally in my office after taking an appointment. Together, let us share our ideas, dreams and vision to make the learning process an even more exciting experience.
